Anna Pooley
Heemskerk

Anna Pooley is one small cog in the very very big wheel of Fosters and she's managed to make more interesting wine than most of the rest of her comrades put together (with the exception of Emma Wood!). It might be because she's hiding out down in Tassie and quietly working away on cool, exotic riesling, steely, powerful chardonnay and seriously impressivev pinot noir. There's no doubt that Tasmania's terroir and some young talent makes a potent combination.
Q&A

Is there a wine or a person that inspires you as a winemaker?
My peers in the Tasmanian wine industry inspire me as a whole. There is fantastic energy in Tassie at the moment and everyone embraces and supports each other.

What is so-hot-right-now in wine?
Pushing the boundaries.

What got you into wine?
As soon as I could reach a vine and handle snips without cutting myself, I was roped into helping out the annual pick at my Grandparents' vineyard. It was a great opportunity for the family to get together.

What's your desert island wine?
Wachau Gruner Veltliner served super chilled.

Why should you win the people's vote for the YGWA?
To get this far is a win in itself and to be recognised alongside the 11 other finalists is a great honour.  For me it is important that the wines I make are an expression of not only regionality but also engage the consumer.

If there was no wine in the world...
I would try and find out where it all went.

As a winemaker, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Wearing gumboots and driving tractors.

What's the one word that sums you up?

Driven.
