Colin McBryde
Adelina & Some Young Punks

Colin McBryde ain't your conventional image of a man with PhD. His shaved head and full sleeve tatts are a long way from side parts and lab coats. But when you realise that one of his labels, Some Young Punks, is all about a punk attitude to winemaking you'll start to piece it all together. Along with partner Jennie Gardiner and her family, he's deep into old vine Clare Valley with the Adelina project and add Nick Bourke to the mix, along with ephemeral pop art, and you have Some Young Punks. Seriously good booze with seriously good attitude!
Q&A

Is there a wine or a person that inspires you as a winemaker?
Not any one particular person, but people who are passionate and have integrity are inspiring. There's a plethora of booze that inspires me... locally, Wendouree really kicks it for me.

What is so-hot-right-now in wine?
Sustainable agricultural practices.

What got you into wine?

A now somewhat fortunate altercation which rendered out of home and requiring income, so I started working at a local winery.

What's your desert island wine?

I'm pretty easy going so I'd be happy with any LeRoy Musigny or Chambertin.

Why should you win the people's vote for the YGWA?
You know, I can't think of why people should vote for me. There's a great selection of young motivated, innovators in the Australian Wine industry in this line up. It's cool just being included.

If there was no wine in the world...
I would be championing beer.

As a winemaker, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Kicking on with Adelina and Punks, making booze and enjoying life. Likely bald and over weight, oh wait...

What's the one word that sums you up?
Tattooed.
