Emma Wood
Seppelt

Sometimes it's easy to start from scratch when making waves as a young winemaker. Emma Wood has certainly had her work cut out for her, following in the hallowed gum boot clad steps of some of Australia's most famous winemakers at Seppelt in Great Western. She's come up trumps and, you might argue (we often do!), that she's making the best wine ever to emerge from the historic site. Vibrant Emma Wood is doing a great job with Seppelt - one of Australia's most historic wineries.
Q&A

Is there a wine or a person that inspires you as a winemaker?
The Seppelt family, who believed that a parcel of land in unpredictable and cold  Drumborg near Portland was to be the future for Seppelt white and sparkling wines. It was planted in1964 and to this day there are only a handful of other vineyards around the area. What a visionary and passionate family!

What's so-hot-right-now in wine?
Any winemaking technique that is a little less mainstream such whole bunch fermentation in reds, that help give wines extra complexity and texture and a talking point!

What got you into wine?
My fascination and intrigue when Mum used to sit at the family dinner table and be able to pick the variety and region of a wine served blind from the family cellar.

What's your desert island wine?

A Coche Dury - totally underrated and very stylish.

Why should you win the people's vote for the Young Gun of Wine Awards?

Because subtle and elegant cool climate wines deserve the attention the fleshier full fruit styles have had for years and I'm a nice person too!

If there was no wine in the world...
I wouldn't have a job that I love so much, but I would get my life back over the summer months!

As a winemaker where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Making focused exciting wines from top Australian regions.
