Fruit for this Catalonian blend (47% tempranillo, 35% mataro, 18% garnacha) was sourced from two independent, cool climate wine regions within Victoria. The tempranillo was grown in the King Valley, while the other two components were grown at the Crittenden's family vineyard, 20mins drive north of the Mornington Peninsula at Patterson Lakes.
Paying homage to a classic Catalonian red blend this wine spans a spectrum ofcharacters with the result being far greater than merely the sum of its parts. With cool climate influences at the core of all three components, the tempranillo brings rich berry fruit characters and strong savoury tannins, while both mataro and garnacha provide the spice and elegance. Juicy natural acidity helps to lift and lengthen the palate while the absence of new oak use during the ageing process ensures the wine displays a sense of place rather than winemaker influence.
A perfect accompaniment to rabbit or game dishes. Although drinking well in its youth, this wine should reward those who are patient enough to cellar for up to five years
Through an error during the importation of planting material from Spain, what Australian vignerons thought to be albarino has since been identified as a little known variety called savagnin (not to be confused with sauvignon blanc). None the less, Crittenden believes that this variety is one of the most exciting additions to Australia's wine scene in decades and are committed to its establishment and success, "We feel the lifted aro-matics, vibrant acidity and crisp crunchy palate of this variety are so reminiscent of some the great whites of the Galicia region in Spain that we have decided to call our version Tributo a Galicia."
This Savignan fruit comes from the King Valley.
The wine is a truly enjoyable drink showing lifted aromatics of peaches, lemon zest and a slight floral hint. These traits continue through the palate with characters of green apple, Nashi pears and a crunchy dry finish with fresh zingy acidity. The accompaniment of fresh prawns or pan seared scallops will certainly provide greater enjoyment.
Rollo and his father Garry run their small, family owned wine company (Crittenden Estate) based at Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Their Vineyard / Winery operation has, over the years, metamorphosed into an iconic site in a region that is now achieving international acclaim for its wines. In addition to the regional stars of pinot noir and chardonnay, the Crittendens have also turned their hand to several Italian varieties under their Pinocchio label with great success. Never wanting to grow bored, this father and son team have now enlisted the help of Rollo's sister Zoe to produce two Spanish style wines which appropriately go by the name of ‘Los Hermanos' (translated to the siblings).
