Made from a single vineyard from Dixons Creek in the Northern Yarra Valley. These 28 year old vines are found on yellow duplex soil. A small percentage of the fruit has been fermented with whole bunches. The open fermenter is allowed to soaked cold for five days before fermentation occurs naturally without the addition of yeast. Only 20% new oak is used in the form of a large format 500 litre barrel. The wine was neither fined nor filtered.
This is the inaugural release of this wine.
El Wanderer is a single vineyard wine made from hundred year old bush Carinyena vines. Carinyena is the local Catalan word for Carignan, a red grape variety found along the Mediterranean rim that produces medium bodied fragrant wines of rustic charm.
The vineyard from which this wine has been crafted is nestled in a very special part of the world. The Emporda is a little known wine region an hour and a half north of Barcelona. It is the North Eastern most corner of Spain, right at the border with France. It is a land of many contrasts and colours. It is where the Pyrenees come down to touch the sea, where Ferran Adria presides over his restaurant El Bulli, it was the play ground and birth place of Salvador Dali, it is a land shaped by the Tramontana wind which Gabriel Garcia Marques wrote of in his short story of the same name, where the hills still bear the scars of the ancient olive and vine terraces, where the white washed villas of the fishing village Cadaques wait silently in winter for the teeming madness of summer.
El Wanderer is a wine that speaks of the Emporda. It is boldly aromatic yet medium bodied in the mouth. It has great texture and real character, dark fruits and hints of the sea with wafting rustic notes.
The Wanderer is dedicated to creating small quantities of exceptional wine.
The Wanderer strives to deliver individual wines of flavour, character and balance by working with low yielding vineyards and using minimal wine making techniques to preserve the vineyard's natural goodness.
The Wanderer is made by Andrew Marks who is based in the Yarra Valley but continues to roam the great wine regions of the world.
