Dan Buckle
Mount Langi Ghiran
Dan Buckle is one clever dude. He grew up with a family pinot noir vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula and, having completed a spell of wine science at university, he headed to Bordeaux to make some wine and get some experience. He made some Appellation Cadillac which sounds really cool - clean lines and a long finish we assume. Burgundian experience followed suit and in recent years he has crafted a revelation for the Mount Langi project based around old vines, granite soils and spicy, peppery shiraz. Is there nothing this man cannot do?
Q&A
Is there a wine or a person that inspires you as a winemaker?
You just can't go past James Halliday. There are so many young wine-makers whose career he has helped launch. There is so much I admire about him; his critical mind, generous heart and immense contribution through his writings.
What is so-hot-right-now in wine?
Natural wines but for all the wrong reasons. There is huge online discussion loaded with nonsense and spin. We need to get away from all the hype. I don't know many winemakers who seek to over-manipulate their wines. Wine made carefully from a special place is really what its all about.
What got you into wine?
Teenage pranks! My mates and I decided to ‘sample' a case of my father's 1961 Chateau Coutet. Later I was thinking about a viable job at the time, something tangible, that i could turn into a career.
What's your desert island wine?
If it's going to be hot on the island then 1996 Salon Cuvee S. Are there any ducks on the island? Maybe 1999 DRC La Tache instead.
Why should you win the people's vote for the YGWA?
Not too sure and me but i hope they love the wines i make and am passionate about.
(Complete this sentence) If there was no wine in the world...
I would have to go scuba diving instead.
As a winemaker, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Still continuing to hone my skills, making smaller batches, and working in finer and finer detail. And holed up in the coldest parts of Victoria of course.
What's the one word that sums you up?
Meticulous.
