Franco D'Anna
Hoddles Creek

With the wine trade in their blood (well, quite literally) since 1963, the d'Anna family (of Boccaccio Cellars fame) started Hoddles Creek Estate in 1997 and let Franco d'Anna loose on the task of making some of the most engaging and compelling wine the Yarra Valley has ever seen (these brackets are getting ridiculous). He's nailed pinot noir and chardonnay, made pinot blanc that no-one ever dreamed Australia would be capable of and he hasn't finished yet. Franco's got the talent, the family knows what works at the retail coalface and we're very bloody happy to welcome him back to the fold as a finalist again in 2010.
Q&A

What is so-hot-right-now in wine?
Gary Mills. I don't know if it is his looks or his wines being so good. Maybe it is both.

What got you into wine?
I grew up in the family wine retail business. Guess it's all I know now.

What's your desert island wine?
Riccadonna Asti Spumante, a house special. Maybe that's why I have four kids.

Why should you win the people's vote for the YGWA?

Speaking honestly, this will be my last chance at YGWA. Plus, I never win anything.

(Complete this sentence) If there was no wine in the world...
I would be a plumber. Moneys great and I love the stubbies and singlet look.

As a winemaker, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Looking a little older, but doing exactly what I'm doing now. I really wouldn't want to change anything, I love my job.

What's the one word that sums you up?
Determined.
