Michael Aylward
Ocean Eight

What a nice young lad Mike Aylward is! He sailed into contention as a finalist in the Young Gun of Wine Award once again this year on the back of an ever-stronger offering of wines, more confident and convincing - they're evolving thoughtfully. Through dedicated and studious visits to the great Domaines of Burgundy, Aylward has developed a respect for vineyard typicity and subtle winemaking style that few amass in a lifetime. He's also a red hot Carlton supporter - thankfully he's a lot more consistent than his footy team.

Q&A

Is there a wine or a person that inspires you as a winemaker?
All wines that express true regional and varietal characters from the vintage the grapes were grown are inspiring. These are the wine I want to try year in year out. For me Bindi ticks all these boxes.

What is so-hot-right-now in wine?
Chardonnay is going through an exciting revolution. Expect big things in the next year or two.

What got you into wine?
Bored of beer and too embarassed to drink UDL's.

What's your desert island wine?
UDL's - Not really a wine but a good match with coconuts.

Why should you win the people's vote for the YGWA?
I have purchased a new shirt this year after Rory's recommendation.

If there was no wine in the world...
We would have a lot more money in the bank.

As a winemaker, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Probably still tryin to get over the line in the YGWA. This is my third year!

What's the one word that sums you up?
Vague.
