2009 Pinot Gris

2009 was a tough year on the Mornington Peninsula. Five days above forty four degrees celsius saw much of the fruit burn and shrivel, leaving very low crops. As a result, the wine shows concentrated flavours of citrus, spice and some cloves. The palate has considerable weight, so the wine did not require as much residual sugar as the previous vintage to fill out the palate. The texture is oily and very well balanced with a good dose of acid. The wine will match particularly well with spicy foods, tapas style dining and dishes that include mushrooms.

2009 Verve Chardonnay

A lean citrus style with inspiration from Chablis, the 2009 Verve Chardonnay has honey/macadamia-nut aromas with some clove spices from barrel fermentation. The fruit is very much in the lime and grapefruit spectrum. The finish is the highlight with a racy acid and mineral mouth-feel up the centre of the pallet. This wine will match well with oysters and anything that requires a hit of lemon.

Moulded from the traditional cellars of Burgundy, Ocean Eight is a boutique set-up with a focus on high quality. Their winery in Red Hill features an underground barrel room with a capacity of 350 barrels, not only enabling the wine to be stored at a constant low temperature and ideal humidity, but also to be moved by gravity alone – the gentlest method for moving wine. Ocean Eight aims to control every part of the wine process from growing the fruit right through to bottling and distribution.
